Westchester is also home to world-renowned institutions such as Columbia University Nevis Labs, the home to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering biotechnology resource center specializing in microbeam technology. The center’s Radiological Research Accelerator Facility (RARAF), located in Irvington, NY’s 60-acre campus recently announced the installation of $2.7 million, custom designed and manufactured, linear accelerator booster which establishes Columbia University as the only institution in the United States with an instrument dedicated to research on heavy ion radiation therapy.
Working with private companies and establishing public-private partnerships, New York State investment has led to cutting-edge research being performed by industry leaders such as Westchester-headquartered IBM and others. These efforts have firmly positioned Westchester County at the forefront of the technology sector.
