Quantum Consortium Welcomes New Members and Celebrates Regional Gains
Westchester County, New York (July 21, 2025) – The New York Quantum Consortium, a collaboration led by the Westchester County Office of Economic Development and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), to convene the statewide ecosystem of participants in the field of quantum information technologies, recently welcomed new members during its quarterly meeting. The Consortium also celebrated significant achievements among members, all of whom are advancing the region’s position as a leader and innovator in the field.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins said: “The New York Metro region continues to deepen its ties to the quantum sector and advance our position as a hub for groundbreaking quantum innovations. As the Consortium continues to grow, it is clear that this area has the industry leaders, innovators, and skilled workforce needed to capitalize on the growth potential and impact that quantum has to offer.”
Westchester County Director of Economic Development Bridget Gibbons said: “The depth of research, testing, and development taking place from Long Island to western New York is inspiring. Here in Westchester, IBM recently announced plans to build the world’s first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer, which is a significant step forward for quantum as a whole. This momentum is critical for Westchester and our area to continue advancing its leadership in both the regional and national quantum sector.”
Westchester County Director of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Deborah Novick said: “We were delighted to welcome new members to The New York Quantum Consortium during our latest meeting. The consortium continues to attract a broad range of quantum innovators who are tackling everything from robust STEM education to developing new technologies in quantum computing, networking, simulation, and sensing. New York state is rich with quantum talent, and we look forward to continued collaboration in support of this dynamic sector.”
The Quantum Consortium’s newest members include:
- Armory Square Ventures, which leads Seed and Series A rounds in B2B SaaS, marketplace, and vertical AI companies;
- Moog, a worldwide designer, manufacturer, and systems integrator of high-performance precision motion and fluid controls and control systems;
- New York Power Authority (NYPA), the largest public power organization in the nation;
- SAS, a global leader in data and AI; and,
- Upstate Capital Association of New York, whose mission is to increase access to capital for companies and deal flow for investors across New York.
NYCEDC Chief Strategy Officer Cecilia Kushner, said: "The growth of the NY Quantum Consortium is a powerful testament to the region's position as a global leader for quantum information and technology innovation. Bringing together talented innovators to collaborate on the opportunities for quantum to solve real-world problems is exactly what drives this momentum, and NYCEDC is excited to continue this work alongside our partners at the Westchester County Office of Economic Development."
As part of a NIST RAMPS-funded initiative to strengthen New York’s quantum computing and cybersecurity workforce, the New York Quantum Consortium is supporting a continuum of summer programs designed to connect local students to emerging careers in the field. Led by The Coding School's Qubit by Qubit initiative, this effort aims to build a more robust pipeline of quantum talent across the state.
Earlier this summer, over 50 undergraduate students with ties to New York—representing institutions including City College of New York, Columbia, NYIT, Stony Brook, SUNY Albany, John Jay, and others—completed the four-week Quantum Summer Institute (QSI), where they explored foundational topics in quantum computing and heard from leaders in the field, including New York State’s Chief Cyber Officer Colin Ahearn, Unitary Foundation, SandboxAQ, and EY. Students also participated in in-person site visits to AWS, Bluefors, and IBM.
Currently, 12 QSI students are continuing into the Early Quantum Career Immersion program, where they are working with mentors from AWS, Bluefors, SEEQC, and QuEra on quantum research projects. Together, QSI and EQCI are cultivating the next generation of quantum leaders in New York, providing both technical training and direct exposure to the region’s growing quantum industry.
Additionally, Consortium members, representing quantum ventures from across the region, have released significant news, including:
- IBM in Armonk has announced plans to build the world’s first large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2029.
- Qunnect, based in Brooklyn, has raised $10 million in Oversubscribed Series A Extension, spearheaded by Airbus Ventures with participation from Cisco Investments, and has deployed quantum networks to two major cities.
- SEEQC, a leader in scalable and energy-efficient quantum technologies based in Elmsford, recently announced a strategic technical collaboration with IBM as part of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative
- SandboxAQ recently announced a collaboration with Stand Up To Cancer® (SU2C) that brings SandboxAQ's Large Quantitative Models to SU2C-funded cancer research projects.
- Griffiss Institute will host a Quantum Innovation Camp from August 18 to 22, as well as several other STEM camps for youth this summer.
- On April 23, Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins announced, during the 2025 State of the County Address, a new strategic partnership with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), the nation’s first technological research university. This partnership will provide area working professionals with access to a top-tier STEM education on demand and fulfills a strategic initiative to bring high-quality engineering and applied science programs, including quantum, to the County.
Recent events highlighting New York’s excellence and leadership in quantum include:
- New York City Tech Week, which took place in June and featured two quantum-related events hosted by IBM.
- Unitary Foundation Hackathon, which took place from May 28 to June 11.
